Five Rescued in Pacific After Three Months Adrift, Four Still Missing

Five people have been rescued in the Pacific Ocean after being missing at sea for three months, several media outlets report.

Among those rescued are two children.

The group was rescued by locals off the Kiribati island of Tabuaeran (formerly Fanning) on Sunday. The boat had drifted about 5,400 kilometres east of Micronesia.

Four more people are still missing. The group of nine was reported missing in late July, the US Coast Guard in Guam confirmed.

“It is incredible and wonderful news that these five have been found and are receiving treatment,” the Coast Guard said in an email to the AP.

According to ABC News, the survivors were severely dehydrated and malnourished when they were found, but now appear to be slowly recovering.
