Production of fish and crayfish for release in natural waters or farming was 660 tons last year, compared to 1,190 tons in 2023 – a decrease of 44 percent, the agency writes in a press release.
In Sweden, rainbow trout, a salmonid fish, accounted for 85 percent of the total food fish production last year – which corresponds to approximately 7,700 tons. Despite its dominance, the production of rainbow trout as food fish decreased by nine percent during the year, approximately 800 tons.
The number of people employed in the industry also decreased during the past year. Around 500 people were estimated to work in the industry, called aquaculture, in 2024, which is a decline of five percent compared to the previous year.
Despite the decrease in employment and production, the industry's operating costs last year remained at approximately the same level as in 2023.
The costs last year amounted to 245 million kronor and include, among other things, energy, feed, maintenance and living aquaculture organisms.
