The United Kingdom has for the first time appointed a woman to head the intelligence service MI6. Blaise Metreweli will take over the post in the autumn, announces Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Metreweli has had leading roles within both MI6 and MI5.
The appointment takes place in a situation where the United Kingdom, according to Starmer, is facing security threats "of unprecedented magnitude".
MI6 is, among other things, known as the home of the fictional agent James Bond.
