Chinese companies Huawei Technologies and ZTE were excluded from the procurement of new 5G networks in Finland in 2021, citing national security concerns. Now Finnish authorities want to go a step further and also ban base stations and other 5G equipment from suppliers such as Huawei – without naming the company. This is according to a draft of new regulations that is out for consultation and published by Finland's communications authority Traficom.
"Our goal in Finland is to ensure that we have secure communication networks," writes responsible minister Lulu Ranne in an emailed response to questions.
She refers to EU recommendations.
The European Commission has previously identified Huawei and ZTE as high-risk suppliers of telecom equipment.
