Finland is pushing for a retrospective change to the EU's controversial nature restoration law, although so far only Sweden is on board.

According to the Finnish news agency STT, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has prepared a letter that he wants to send to EU Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall.

The letter calls for simplifications of the law, citing high costs and heavy bureaucracy. Now Orpo hopes to get more signatories than Sweden in order to send the letter by January, writes STT.

The Nature Restoration Act, with requirements for the restoration of wetlands and green areas, was pushed through after fierce debates in the summer of 2024. Sweden and Finland were then two of only six countries that voted no.
