Hong Kong's local elections have not engaged the city's residents. Not even one in three eligible voters bothered to vote for any pro-Beijing candidate.

Only "patriots" and people loyal to Beijing are allowed to sit in Hong Kong's legislature. With the people only being able to vote in 20 of the chamber's 90 seats in direct elections, voter turnout remained low. 31.9 percent voted, a slightly higher percentage than four years ago, but in actual terms fewer votes were cast.

For the 20 seats, the people had 51 candidates to choose from, but none from either of Hong Kong's two largest democratic opposition parties in recent years. One was dissolved in 2023, the other is about to end its activities.

At least eleven people have been arrested, accused of urging people not to vote.
