The information and reporting from the shooting has been conflicting. Some media outlets reported that two or three people were killed, while others stated that only one police officer was injured.
At 1 p.m. local time in Sweden, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül confirmed that one of the three suspected shooters had been killed and the other two were wounded. In addition, two police officers were slightly injured, according to Gül. The Turkish Interior Ministry says the dead shooter has links to what authorities define as a terrorist group, without specifying which group.
The shooting began at 11:15 a.m. local time in Sweden and lasted about five minutes. The three suspected perpetrators were armed with rifles and wore backpacks and camouflage clothing, according to media reports.
The area was cordoned off and several police patrols were sent to the scene. An investigation has been launched, according to Justice Minister Akin Gürlek.
The consulate is located in a multi-story building in the Besiktas area, where several large protests against Israel's military operations have been held in recent years.
The motive for the shooting is unclear. No Israeli diplomats are currently in Turkey, the AFP news agency wrote, citing sources.
