Famine is spreading in war-torn Sudan, reports the UN-backed IPC, which monitors the world's food supply.

The thresholds for acute malnutrition have now been exceeded in the disputed areas of Um Baru and Kernoi in North Darfur state, according to the IPC's assessment.

The development has been accelerated by the October capture of the state capital, al-Fashir, by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. During the bloody fighting for the city, tens of thousands of people fled to substandard refugee camps in nearby areas.

At the end of 2025, the IPC also found famine conditions in al-Fashir and Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state.

Sudan's civil war, which has raged since April 2023, has forced almost eleven million people to flee and pushed several regions to starvation and famine.
