A powerful explosion that partially destroyed a residential building, followed by a man being found dead and two women injured, led the police to close the popular beer festival, which had been going on for almost two weeks.

A large area in northern Munich was also cordoned off, and a large police investigation is still ongoing.

The incident is described as a "family dispute", and the house where something detonated was the deceased man's home. The two seriously injured women are his mother and daughter, respectively. The man is, according to the police, a German citizen from a place south of Munich, reports the public service company BR.

However, there is no threat to the festivities, according to the police, and Munich's mayor Dieter Reiter says in a clip on

that the gates to the Oktoberfest are open on Wednesday evening.

The safety of all visitors is the top priority. Big thanks to all who participated in the operation for your quick and professional work, he says.

The many thousands of beer tourists can thus return to the festival site just outside central Munich. Many of them had, according to Süddeutsche Zeitung, during the afternoon ignored the police warnings and moved their festival visit to the city's large beer halls around Marienplatz.
