A blind shell – that is, some kind of previously undetonated explosive device – is believed to have exploded, according to the British-based Syrian Human Rights Observatory (SOHR).
The explosion occurred in a four-story building. The state news agency Sana reports that it was a scrap dealer who tried to remove metal from the device when it detonated.
Aid organizations have warned of the danger of ammunition that has been left in the terrain after the civil war in the country. Experts estimate that between 100,000 and 300,000 of the bombs and grenades used during the war never detonated.
The incident occurs after last weekend's violence in the same area, when around 1,400 people are said to have been killed in battles and outright massacres, according to SOHR.
