He got the nickname "superpolice" - but in secret, he received large bribes from Mexico's largest cartel under the leadership of drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. 56-year-old Genaro García Luna was convicted in 2023 and has been imprisoned in the USA since then.

Now comes the next setback for the former minister. According to a decision from a court in the American state of Florida, Luna will, together with his wife, pay 2.4 billion dollars - equivalent to 23 billion kronor - to Mexico, after the government sued the couple for corruption and money laundering.

"The verdict is consistent with seven convictions that have previously been handed down and enforced against García Luna, his wife, and his five companies as a result of their failure to appear in court," it states in a statement from the Mexican government.

Around three million dollars are said to have already been recovered by the government from the couple's assets, including properties.

Genaro García Luna was a minister in President Felipe Calderón's government from 2006 to 2012. Before that, he was the head of Mexico's equivalent to the FBI.

After his time in government, he started a security company in Miami, using his connections to win lucrative contracts with the Mexican government. He was arrested in December 2019 in Dallas, Texas.
