France's public health authority has compiled new statistics on the number of deaths in the Paris region of Ile-de-France during the period June 22-28 this year, when record-breaking temperatures above 40 degrees were measured across the country.
A total of 3,000 deaths were recorded, and of those, 1,565 were above the average mortality rate.
"A very high excess mortality has been observed. It is mainly people over 65 years of age - they accounted for 82.4 percent of the death rate," the authority writes in its report, according to LeParisien.
In nine European countries, including France, at least 12,000 more deaths than normal were recorded at the end of June, an analysis by the AFP news agency shows.
