During the meeting with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, it was decided to continue talks on the future of Greenland, says Løkke Rasmussen.
We have decided to form a high-level working group to explore whether we can find a common way forward.
The talks will focus on addressing US security concerns, while respecting Denmark's red lines, says the Foreign Minister.
US President Donald Trump said at a press conference at the White House that "We'll see what happens," but that he had not been informed of everything that was said at the meeting.
"We have a good relationship with Denmark," he said, but added that the United States can act in a way that Denmark cannot.
You saw that with Venezuela.
Ready to do more
Lars Løkke Rasmussen emphasizes that both the US and Denmark already have a military presence in Greenland, but that Denmark is prepared to do more.
There is no imminent threat from China or Russia that we cannot handle, he says.
Regarding an American presence in Greenland, Rasmussen notes that the US has reduced the number of bases and soldiers on the island.
They had 10,000 soldiers; now they have 200. It was not our decision.
Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt says she wants to see strengthened cooperation with the United States, but not owned by the United States.
For us, the most important thing is that we find a way back to a normal relationship with the United States.
Notable comments
Løkke Rasmussen notes that the visit to Washington follows "a number of remarkable comments" about Greenland, referring to Trump's repeated statements that the United States must take over Greenland.
"We have a different opinion. We, the Kingdom of Denmark, continue to believe that the long-term security of Greenland can also be ensured within the current framework," says Løkke Rasmussen.
We didn't manage to change the American attitude, but I didn't expect that either. It's clear that the president has a desire to conquer Greenland.
Sweden's Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) tells TT that the meeting was necessary.
There has been very serious rhetoric from the American side. The important thing here is that they have reached an agreement to continue the dialogue, and that is the only way to lower the temperature.
