Save the Children points to the recent years where the pandemic has been followed by increased inflation, as well as increased food and housing costs, unemployment and real wage reductions.
"The development has made it difficult for families with children who already lacked or had small margins to make everyday life work. Save the Children has noticed an increased vulnerability among families with children we meet in our operations", says the organization's Secretary General Åsa Regnér in a press release.
To reduce child poverty, the organization primarily emphasizes income support.
"If you receive income support, it must be enough to put food on the table, pay the rent and meet the basic needs of children. Therefore, the support needs to be adjusted to the economic deterioration and the actual costs of living for families with children", says Åsa Regnér.
Save the Children's measure of child poverty is based on the Swedish Consumer Agency's calculations for households' basic consumption. The analyses are based on households with children (0-17 years) based on income statistics and whether they have received income support.
