Analysts had, on average, expected growth of 0.2 percent, the same level as the previous quarter.
Compared with the first quarter of last year, growth was 0.8 percent in the first quarter of this year. This compares with an average forecast of 0.9 percent, according to Bloomberg.
The statistical office Eurostat separately reported inflation of 3.0 percent in April, in line with expectations. This compares with 2.6 percent in March.
Core inflation in the eurozone - which excludes energy prices, among other things - fell to 2.2 percent. This was also in line with expectations.
