+ What?
European Championship, women.
+ When?
18–29 June.
+ Where?
Germany, Greece, Italy and the Czech Republic.
+ How the European Championship is decided
The European Championship is decided on four game sites with four-team groups. Sweden plays in Hamburg, Germany. The other groups are decided in Pireus, Greece, Bologna, Italy, and Brno, the Czech Republic.
The first and second place in the groups advance to the quarterfinals, which are decided on 24–25 June. Semifinals are played on 27 June and medal matches on 29 June.
The knockout matches and medal matches are played in Pireus.
+ Sweden's matches
19 June Germany (8:00 PM), 20 June Great Britain (5:15 PM), 22 June Sweden–Spain (3:15 PM).
+ The group of death?
Sweden plays in group D and there, Spain is seen as the big favorite and a final challenger for the European Championship gold. The Spanish women were in the final two years ago (lost to Belgium) and took three European Championship golds and one European Championship bronze between 2013–2019.
Just like Germany, the Spanish women reached the quarterfinals in the Olympic Games last summer, but the Germans have been affected by two major setbacks. Sisters Nyara and Satou Sabally, who both play in the American professional league WNBA, have withdrawn.
Great Britain is ranked 20th in the world – five places ahead of Sweden – and is a team that the Swedes must beat to have a chance of advancing. The blue and yellow team beat Great Britain twice in qualifying, but it was close matches.
+ Frida Eldebrink historic
Frida Eldebrink, 37, is playing her fifth European Championship – the most of all in Swedish basketball history, regardless of gender. Louice Halvarsson is also an experienced championship player and is now playing her fourth European Championship.
Of the twelve in the squad, six players were part of the team in 2021 when the women's national team last played the European Championship.
Star duo Elin Eldebrink and Regan Magarity are missing the European Championship due to injuries.
+ Other groups
Group A (Pireus): Greece, Turkey, France, Switzerland. Group B (Bologna): Slovenia, Serbia, Italy, Lithuania. Group C (Brno): Belgium, the Czech Republic, Montenegro, Portugal.
+ European Championship history
This will be the sixth time the women's national team plays the European Championship. Sweden was in the quarterfinals in 2013 as well – further than that, the women's national team has never gone.
