ESS Director General Helmut Schober calls it “a milestone.”
The European Spallation Source (ESS) is scheduled to be fully operational in 2028. It will send protons at 96 percent of the speed of light through a linear accelerator towards a rotating tungsten target station. The collision releases neutrons that will then be fed to various instruments, where researchers can investigate the atomic structures and behavior of different materials.
The permit for test operation has been granted by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, ESS said in a press release.
