Aside from Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk visited Moldova's leader Maia Sandu in Chisinau. The symbolically important visit was made on Moldova's 34th anniversary of independence.
The visit shows how important Moldova's future role is for several of the EU's leading countries. President Sandu is trying to steer the country into the EU, and the support from the three was therefore significant.
Your presence here shows not only support for Moldova, it also shows that the European project is alive – and that we are a part of it, said Sandu.
Macron launched an attack on Moscow and warned of Russian hybrid attacks against Moldova ahead of upcoming parliamentary elections.
The Kremlin's propaganda claims that Europeans want to prolong the war (in Ukraine) and that the EU oppresses its inhabitants. This is lies. Unlike Russia, the EU does not threaten anyone, and we respect everyone's independence, said Macron.
