The guidelines are being introduced following criticism from athletes who have testified that certain camera angles can create discomfort and distraction by shifting attention away from their sporting achievements, Reuters reports on its website.
“The development of the guidelines is a crucial step towards eliminating harmful portrayals of women in our sport,” said EA President Dobromir Karamarinov.
Television companies are urged to avoid prolonged close-ups of specific body parts and low camera angles taken from behind or below, Reuters writes.
The announcement comes a month before the European Athletics Championships, which will be held in Birmingham in August.
