Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic is flying to Washington this afternoon to meet his counterparts, says Olof Gill, spokesperson for the EU Commission on trade issues.
Donald Trump threatened over the weekend to impose 30-percent tariffs on EU goods from August 1.
The EU has drawn up a package of measures – which must be approved by the member countries – including tariffs to the value of 72 billion euros. This includes, among other things, machine products, electronics and wine. The list does not, however, mention specific tariff rates.
Sefcovic responded after Monday's meeting of trade ministers in Brussels that it was "very clear from today's discussions that 30-percent tariffs are absolutely unacceptable".
