Member countries in the EU will need to invest 241 billion euros – roughly 2,600 billion Swedish kronor – in renovating and building nuclear power plants by 2050.
The European Commission calculates this in a new report, where it at the same time calls for faster licensing processes but also increased efforts to develop facilities that handle nuclear waste.
“Nuclear power has a role to play in building a resilient and clean energy sector,” states energy commissioner Dan Jørgensen in a press release.
The commission estimates that the amount of energy from nuclear power in the EU will increase by around ten percent from 2025 to 2050.
