German Chancellor Friedrich Merz envisions a model where Ukrainian ministers can attend EU meetings, but for the time being, without voting rights. But such ideas must not replace real membership, believes EU Minister Jessica Rosencrantz (M).
"It's good that they're starting a discussion. But they can never be a substitute for formal negotiations," she says in connection with Tuesday's EU ministerial meeting in Brussels.
Sweden is instead focusing on getting Ukraine's "normal" negotiations for EU membership underway, which have long been blocked by Hungary. A change is expected under new Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who meets the EU Commission in Brussels on Thursday.
