The simpler accounting requirements apply mainly to the smallest companies and those that act further down the supply chain. At the same time, the proposal means that one is in practice postponing the legislation only half a year, instead of a whole year as one previously flagged.
With this package, which I think is very targeted and balanced, we can be very committed to combating deforestation, but also see to it that we do things in a more efficient way, says Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall in an appearance in Luxembourg.
The World Wildlife Fund, WWF, is however critical.
”The losers are obvious: the companies that have already invested in deforestation-free supply chains and the forests that will continue to disappear at a frantic pace”, says Anke Schulmeister-Oldenhove from WWF in a press release.
The previous plans for a one-year postponement were explained by IT problems. According to Roswall, however, the new simplifications mean less pressure on the IT system.
The proposals must now be approved by both the EU Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers.
