The EU can gradually start to ease the sanctions against Syria if "significant progress" is observed in the country, writes the EU's Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas on X.
Both the USA and the EU want to improve relations with Syria's new government after the former President Bashar al-Assad was forced out of power in December. The EU's sanctions were imposed against Assad's government and large parts of the country's economy during the civil war.
The transitional government in Damascus wants the sanctions to be lifted, but the uncertainty has been great and many countries want to wait and see how the new government handles power before the sanctions are lifted.
