The demands are increasing in the EU to tighten the age limit for social media.

The European Parliament's Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection is urging the Commission to introduce a 16-year age limit, unless there is consent from parents. At the same time, the minimum age should be 13 years, regardless of what the parents say.

"I am proud that the parliament is taking this progressive step", says Danish member Christel Schaldemose in a press release.

Even among the EU's member states, demands for stricter rules are growing. 25 EU countries as well as Norway and Iceland signed a statement on Friday welcoming a promise from Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to investigate suitable measures by the turn of the year.

"We cannot leave it to social media to decide on age limits", it says, among other things, in the so-called Jyllands declaration.
