In total, 530 million euros – approximately 5.8 billion Swedish kronor – will be allocated to Greenland for the years 2028-34.
”The support gives Greenland the opportunity to develop its economy, strengthen education and digitalization, create new workplaces and promote green energy and infrastructure”, comments Denmark's representative in the commission, energy minister Dan Jørgensen, according to the news agency Ritzau.
The budget increase comes after the President of the USA, Donald Trump, has repeatedly expressed his interest in "taking over" Greenland during the year.
The island is not formally a part of the EU, but is still supported economically, just like some French and Dutch areas outside of Europe.
The support is included among the additional details of its major budget proposal that the commission presented on Wednesday. The main features were otherwise presented already in the middle of July. Several years of tough negotiations await regarding the budget before it can be finalized.
