Slovenia's president Natasa Pirc Musar did not mince words about Israel's actions in the Middle East when she spoke in Brussels on Wednesday afternoon.

I think I'll speak honestly: We are witnessing a genocide – and we remain silent, said the Slovenian, who was later met with long standing applause from mainly the parliament's left- and center-wing members.

The inhumane treatment of civilians is not something that the international community can ignore, said Pirc Musar, who is politically independent and previously one of Slovenia's most well-known lawyers.

The situation in the Middle East was also the subject of a subsequent debate among EU parliament members.
