The idea is that all new gas contracts are prohibited from January 1, 2026, whereupon imports via short-term contracts are stopped from June 17 the same year, while the long-term contracts can continue to be used until the end of 2027 - as long as it can be proven that the contracts were written before and not changed after 2025.
When it comes to oil, it is currently stated that the EU countries that still import will have to come up with plans for how they can end imports from the end of 2027.
Hungary and Slovakia have been strongly critical of the proposal from the outset and believe that the phase-out will affect their energy security.
– This phase-out will take place gradually and well-coordinated with the member states, promises the EU's Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen at a press conference in Strasbourg.
