Vegetarian burgers should not be allowed to be called burgers, thinks French EU parliament member Céline Imart, with heavy support from the meat industry. Unserious, respond the critics.

When the EU Parliament votes on its view on measures to facilitate for farmers on Thursday, the debate has mostly come to be about what should actually be allowed to be called burgers, sausages or steaks.

Right-wing member Imart wants the words to only be used for real meat products – but gets a lot of backlash from the opponents.

Keep your paws off my vegoburger! It's completely unserious. It's just plain said to annoy the consumers who today want to eat more vegetarian and thus also for the farmers who want to deliver that food, says for example Pär Holmgren (Green party) in a pre-debate.

Even if Imart were to get through some of their word bans, it is expected to be difficult for them to also be accepted by the EU's member states in the final negotiations on the measures that begin later in the autumn.
