The Commission is now presenting the package for technological independence that it developed during the spring; it includes two legislative proposals, as well as a strategy and a roadmap.
"Europe wants to be in a position where we make our own choices, without risky dependencies on single dominant suppliers, companies or countries," says Commissioner for Digital Henna Virkkunen at a press conference in Brussels.
Specifically, the package proposes faster permitting and increased cooperation for developing and procuring computer chips, as well as more support for research and innovation in AI and cloud services. It also proposes a four-point scale to define which information should be considered so sensitive that it needs to be handled domestically rather than stored in cloud services outside the EU.
