In a later update to Grok Imagine, the chatbot would become better at creating images based on the user's so-called "prompts".
However, after the update, Grok was reported to have created images with sexual content featuring both children and women, reports CNBC, among others.
During a press conference, European Commission spokesman Tomas Regnier said the commission is "seriously reviewing" the incident.
"We are aware that Grok and X now offer a 'spicy mode' that displays explicit sexual content with some images that resemble children. This is not 'spicy', this is illegal. It's disgusting, it's disgusting," he said.
X wrote this weekend that the company is taking the new allegations very seriously.
“We take action against illegal content on X, including material depicting child sexual abuse, by removing it, permanently suspending accounts, and cooperating with local authorities and law enforcement agencies as necessary,” the statement reads.
Grok, created by Elon Musk's company XAI, has previously been in the spotlight for, among other things, statements about the Holocaust.
