The demand appears in a report on the future of the Baltic Sea, produced under the leadership of Lövin and with support from several Swedish members. The hope is that the report will prompt both the European Commission and the EU member states to act for more sustainable and long-term fishing rules.
"Now, small-scale fishing that puts food on the table should be prioritized - not the industrial trawlers that vacuum the Baltic Sea for herring to grind it into fishmeal for animal feed production." Lövin writes in a statement.
The report was ultimately passed with 337 votes in favor, 178 against and 44 abstentions.
