The bourbon tariffs will thus be introduced together with a broader package of countermeasures in response to the Trump administration's 25-percent tariffs on steel and aluminum.
The tariffs on bourbon were previously decided to be introduced on April 1, but the postponement now opens up for more negotiations with representatives of the Trump administration, according to a spokesperson for the EU Commission.
In the USA, bourbon manufacturers have had busy days to adjust to the EU tariffs, including by bringing forward deliveries to the EU – which is one of the largest markets for American spirits manufacturers.
Donald Trump has threatened to introduce 200-percent tariffs on all alcohol products from the EU if the EU introduces 50-percent tariffs on bourbon.
"The EU continues to be ready to enter into a constructive dialogue with the USA, to try to find a solution that does not harm both economies unnecessarily", writes the spokesperson in an email, reports Bloomberg.
