We are preparing alternatives: better use of power purchase agreements (PPAs), state aid measures and subsidies, or even price caps on gas, says European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a debate in the European Parliament.
She said the war clearly shows that the EU must continue to phase out fossil fuels and instead invest in domestic and alternative energy sources.
Ten days of war have already cost European taxpayers an additional $3 billion in fossil fuel imports. That is the price we are forced to pay for our dependence.
She also supports the emissions trading system (ETS), which countries such as Italy and the Czech Republic have accused of driving up prices.
