The announcement comes from Advocate General Tamara Capeta, whose recommendations carry major weight in the court's final decision, Politico writes. The decision is expected within a few months.
In 2024, the European Parliament took the Commission to court. The dispute concerns the equivalent of over 100 billion Swedish kronor that the Commission had long withheld over concerns about Hungary's fight against corruption and the independence of its judiciary.
However, the disbursement was approved at the end of 2023, after the Commission said reforms had been implemented. Critics said the approval was given solely to secure Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's agreement to provide more aid to Ukraine.
