Chinese companies are not allowed to participate in public procurements of medical equipment exceeding five million euros, decides the EU Commission.
The decision covers various types of equipment, including X-ray machines and surgical masks. However, exceptions can be made if no other alternatives are available on other markets.
The measure is the latest in a series as the trade relationship between the EU and China becomes increasingly tense. The EU Commission writes on its website that it hopes China will review its policy for medical products from the EU as it is considered exclusionary and discriminatory.
"The goal of the measures is to level the playing field for companies in the EU," comments the EU's Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic.
