Fires are ongoing in Peloponnesos in southern Greece, west of the capital Athens, but also on the islands of Evia and Kythera, where water planes and helicopters are being used on Sunday to combat the flames. Several homes have been evacuated for the second day in a row.
Greece has asked the EU for help and two Italian planes are expected to arrive on Sunday, while units from the Czech Republic are already on site, according to AFP.
In Turkey, forest fires have been raging for several weeks and fires are being combated in several regions. On Sunday, hundreds of people have been forced to leave their homes in the country's fourth largest city, Bursa, as a forest fire has spread rapidly in the area during the night. A local opposition politician in the province describes it as an "apocalypse" according to AP.
On Wednesday, eleven people died near Eskisehir, about 20 miles southwest of Ankara, when they were fighting a forest fire.
From Albania, there are also reports of extensive fires, where the military is being deployed to assist in firefighting, according to Reuters.
On Saturday, a larger forest fire also broke out in Sigean in southern France. Over 600 firefighters are working on the fire, which was still not under control on Sunday, reports Le Parisien.
