Late on Sunday evening, firefighters fought five larger fire fronts in the Peloponnese area in western Greece. Fires also ravaged the islands of Evia, Kythera and Crete.

Most of the fires were under control, with the exception of the fire on Kythera, which has ravaged half the island and is causing continued concern.

- Houses, beehives, olive trees have burned, said the mayor of the island Giorgos Komninos to AFP.

The fire risk in the entire country is still high on Monday.

Described as "apocalypse"

In Turkey, forest fires have ravaged for weeks and fires are being fought in several regions. In the country's fourth largest city, Bursa, a forest fire has spread quickly in the area during the night. A local opposition politician in the province describes it as an "apocalypse" according to AP.

Over 3,500 people have been evacuated from villages northeast of Bursa. Two have died, including one firefighter.

Near Bulgaria's southern border with Greece and Turkey, firefighters also fought several fires. A state of emergency has been declared in the worst affected areas.

Albania also reports extensive fires, where the military is being deployed to assist in firefighting, according to Reuters.

At a distance from destinations

The travel companies Apollo, Tui and Ving currently have no travelers in the exact areas where the forest fires are raging in Greece, according to the travel companies' press spokespeople for TT.

In the event of fires, we follow the assessments of the local authorities and are always on standby, according to Charlotte Hallencreutz at Ving's press service.

We are prepared to arrange buses and relocation to other hotels if needed, she says.
