The European Parliament and the Council of Ministers have reached a provisional agreement on new rules for the management of vehicles, from design to scrapping.

The agreement includes new binding targets for the use of renewable materials in newly manufactured vehicles and for the recycling of certain parts and components, according to a press release from Parliament.

"I am pleased that we managed to tighten the requirements for recycling during the negotiation and that the export of waste from the EU is prevented after a transition period," writes Jonas Sjöstedt (V), who participated in the negotiation for the EU Parliament's left-wing group, in a comment to TT.

The agreement must now be formally approved by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers before the new rules enter into force.

In 2023, 14.8 million motor vehicles were manufactured in the EU, of which 12.4 million were registered.
