On Friday, news came that the Tigray Peace Force militia group, made up of fighters from the northern Tigray region and allied with the Ethiopian government, had taken over the airport in Mekelle.
Now a source says that both government forces and allied forces have been seen in several places in the capital.
Reports of heavy fighting between government forces and rebel forces seeking independence for the region have been ongoing for over a week on multiple fronts.
The events have raised concerns about a return to the devastating civil war between the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front and the central government's military in 2020-2022, when around 600,000 people were killed.
