Measures will be aimed at both entrepreneurs regarding the obligations they have to follow the Discrimination Act and at restaurant visitors regarding the rights they have, and how to proceed to report discrimination.
The Equality Ombudsman's latest report shows that discrimination, particularly on the grounds of ethnic affiliation, is common in the industry. According to a review, for example, people with different skin colors are not given the same opportunity to enter restaurants in Stockholm.
"That discrimination and racism occur in restaurants is unacceptable. Restaurants must take their responsibility under Swedish law and investigate incidents, and visitors need more support and knowledge to dare to report", says Minister for Gender Equality and Labor Life Nina Larsson in a press release.
The Equality Ombudsman will pay particular attention to the vulnerability of young people and engage in dialogue with relevant civil society organizations, including youth organizations. The assignment will be reported no later than March 31, 2027.
