The member in question, Democrat Adelita Grijalva, was sworn in on Wednesday after winning a by-election in Arizona and in connection with this signed the initiative to bring about a vote on the Epstein documents.
Her signature will be number 218 in the order, which is the number needed for the proposal to pass.
The initiative for the vote is led by Republican Thomas Massie and Democrat Ro Khanna. Another Republican who has chosen to turn his back on the party establishment – and President Donald Trump – is Marjorie Taylor Greene. Long seen as one of Congress's most loyal Trump supporters, she has recently gone against Republicans on several issues, including the Epstein documents.
Grijalva's signature comes shortly after previously unknown emails in which Epstein, who died in prison in 2019, mentions Trump in unfavorable terms were made public.
Due to the rules that dictate the procedure in the House of Representatives, the vote cannot take place immediately. However, according to top Democrat Jim McGovern, it is hoped to be carried out in early December.
