At the end of last year, an average of 75,000 registered unemployed people were 55 or older. That's 4,000 more than a year earlier. And older people who become unemployed often remain out of work longer than younger unemployed people, according to the agency's statistics.
"Overall, there is an imminent risk that the number of registered unemployed people older than 55 will remain at high levels," writes AF.
Age discrimination is part of the reason. The Delegation for Senior Workers believes this is because employers' views on older workers are often outdated and incorrect, writes AF.
