SV Elversberg comes from Spiesen-Elversberg in southwestern Germany.
The club debuted in the country's second league two seasons ago and surprisingly finished eleventh. A table position that has been surpassed – significantly.
After 34 rounds, the club was found in third place, just one point from a direct promotion to the Bundesliga.
But the dream of promotion lives on. Now, they are waiting for a qualifying match against Heidenheim, where the winner over two matches gets a spot in the top league.
If Elversberg succeeds, they will break the league record as the smallest Bundesliga club in history, in terms of population. The record holder is currently Unterhaching, which comes from a municipality with 26,000 inhabitants and last played in the Bundesliga in 2001.
But regardless of how it goes against Heidenheim, which finished 16th in the Bundesliga, Elversberg's coach Horst Steffen is proud of what they have achieved.
If promotion happens, I will be happy. But I don't lie awake at night thinking it's unfair that we're not in the top league, says Steffen at a press conference ahead of the qualifying match.
The first meeting is played in Heidenheim tonight, and the return match on Monday.
