Electricity consumption in Sweden continues to decline, despite all the talk about the electrification of society.

Well-filled water reservoirs resulted in record low electricity prices in northern Sweden during the summer.

"Limited transmission capacity from north to south meant that power was locked into northern Sweden and resulted in record low prices in June," says Energy Companies analyst Magnus Thorstensson in a comment.

Overall, over the year, prices fell by just over 30 percent in Norrland, while electricity customers in electricity areas 3 and 4 (Svealand and Götaland) paid up to 25 percent more for electricity than in 2024, according to preliminary annual statistics compiled by the industry organization.

Hydropower produced by far the most, and more than in 2024. Solar power set new records, as usual. On the other hand, nuclear power had a worse year, mainly due to the Oskarshamn plant being shut down for over six months. Wind turbines also produced less electricity this year than in the strong year 2024.

Overall, Swedish electricity production fell slightly during the year and exports remained high. At the same time, electricity imports were at a record low, which can be partly explained by the fact that electricity consumption within the country's borders was one percent lower than last year, even when taking into account outdoor temperatures.
