William Eklund scored two goals and an assist when his San Jose took the season's only second win, away against Minnesota with 6–5.

San Jose has started the NHL season poorly. One win in the first eight matches was the result when they visited Grand Casino Arena in Minnesota. When they left, however, it was with two fresh points, thanks in large part to William Eklund.

The Swede broke the match deadlock five minutes into the first period when his shot found its way into the goal via a Minnesota skate.

Also in the second period, it was Eklund who opened the scoring. A quarter into the period, he sent in 3–2 unmarked after an assist from Philipp Kurashev.

When Eklund in the eighth minute of the third period, together with Macklin Celebrini, played Tyler Toffoli forward to 5–3, it was probably many who dared to hope for the season's first win in regular time.

But just like in the team's only win so far, away against New York Rangers, San Jose would lose its momentum. Minnesota owned the third period. The shot statistics showed 17–5 to the home team during the last twenty minutes of the match. When Joel Eriksson Ek set 5–5 for Minnesota with just over a minute left, overtime was a fact.

Celebrini, however, saved San Jose from yet another loss when he on his own managed to counter in 6–5 in overtime.
