Russia jails eight people for life for an attack on the bridge connecting the Crimean peninsula with Russia.

Five people were killed in the attack on October 8, 2022, almost eight months into Russia's larger war of invasion. Russia initially blamed Ukraine, which later clarified that its intelligence service was behind the attack.

The eight people Russia holds responsible have been sentenced to life imprisonment in a military court, including for what is described as an "act of terrorism."

The attack set a train carrying seven oil tankers on fire and destroyed two sections of the highway that runs over the bridge.

The bridge, which spans the Kerch Strait, connects the annexed Crimean peninsula with the Russian Krasnodar region to the east. Construction began in 2016, two years after Russian forces took control of Crimea, and was completed in 2020.

During Russia's large-scale invasion war, the bridge has been repeatedly targeted by attacks and bombings. Ukraine has claimed responsibility for several, saying they were aimed at slowing down the logistics of Russian invasion forces on Ukrainian soil.
