The Eider has been redlisted for almost 15 years but is now increasing again on Sweden's west coast, reports P4 Väst. The reason for the increase is stated to be an increase in the bird's favorite food, the blue mussel.
That a bird species is redlisted does not mean that it is endangered, but that one has seen a decrease in the species over a period. The Eider stock has previously decreased, among other things due to poorer access to food, such as blue mussels, and that Eiders are a popular prey for sea eagles.
In March this year, the Swedish population of Eiders was estimated to be around 270,000 pairs, according to the Swedish Museum of Natural History.
