Egypt Says It Targeted ‘Criminal Elements’ After Deadly Gold Mine Attack Near Sudan Border

Egypt is accused of carrying out an attack that killed dozens of people near the border with Sudan. The Egyptian military has responded that it acted against “criminal elements.”

The attack on Saturday targeted a gold mine in a disputed border region between northern Sudan and southern Egypt. At least 72 people were killed, according to the human rights group The Emergency Lawyers, which accuses Egypt of carrying out the attack. The same gold mine was targeted in a deadly attack as recently as June.

An eyewitness who spoke to AFP said he saw a fighter jet open fire, killing several people.

On Monday, the Egyptian military said, without directly addressing the allegations, that it had carried out operations against illegal gold mining to "maintain complete sovereignty within the borders of the Egyptian state."
