One of the chains that are rationing eggs is Trader Joe's. The allocation is now one dozen eggs per day and customer.

We hope that these restrictions will help ensure that customers who need eggs can buy them, says a spokesperson for Trader Joe's to NBC.

Other chains that have introduced rationing in some of their stores are Kroger, Aldi, Whole Foods, and Costco. But the restrictions are not that tough yet. In some Whole Foods and Costco stores, it is still possible to buy three dozen eggs (36 pieces) per person.

The shortage of eggs is due to several large outbreaks of bird flu. Since December last year, more than 13 million hens have been killed in the USA.

And when the supply of eggs decreases, prices skyrocket. A year ago, the price for a dozen eggs was around three dollars. A month ago, the price had risen to five dollars.

Prices are also expected to rise further this year. The US Department of Agriculture estimates that they may increase by more than 20 percent.
