The amount of eel on the West Coast has increased significantly since fishing was prohibited.

For the first time since the eel fishing ban along the West Coast was introduced in 2012, an investigation has been made into what effect the ban has had. Test fishing in, among other places, Fjällbacka and Stenungsund shows that the number of eels has increased markedly, reports P4 Väst.

Our analysis suggests that the amount of silver eel ready to migrate to the Sargasso Sea has roughly doubled since the fishing ban came into force in 2012, says researcher Torbjörn Säterberg to the radio.

However, he does not want to say that the crisis for the eel would be over.

The amount of young eel migrating into Europe is at record low levels, so that's something you can't say. What the study shows is that a local measure has local positive effects.
